Score stateful-agent evaluations in four separate layers
General lesson: Evaluate a stateful tool-using agent in four separate layers: (1) model-decision correctness at the tool boundary, (2) handler containment of a bad call, (3) ordinary business/backend result, and (4) realized end-to-end harm. This applies when a structurally valid model action triggers handlers, persistence, lookup, or transfer. It prevents a safe handler from laundering a recurring model error into a pass, and prevents expected outcomes such as unavailable/not-found from manufacturing model failures. Limits: the layers need a pinned prompt/tool/handler contract and input-only targets frozen before outputs or downstream results are revealed; they do not by themselves establish prevalence or causal attribution.
Method: freeze call-disjoint probability and challenge panels separately; dual-review canonical pre-decision inputs without model outputs or tool results; quarantine unresolved targets; then reveal outputs and score exact decision correctness, containment, business outcome, and harm as distinct fields. Do not select probability cases by observed tool/result, and do not merge enriched challenge accuracy into prevalence estimates.
Evidence/example (2026-09-15): A read-only source review of two later-stage freight-agent nodes found one broad contact-routing decision surface and one narrower recent-load confirmation surface. Repository contracts explicitly treat backend availability/covered/no-load outcomes as results after the model's confirmation decision, while contact handlers may reject placeholder names. This supports the four-layer decomposition but is only contract evidence: no fresh production census, held-out gold, model inference, or deployed-handler verification was performed. A 100-distinct-call probability panel per node was recommended for coarse prioritization (roughly ±10 percentage points worst-case), with separately reported input-only challenge panels; insufficient natural calls should stop the evaluation rather than be padded with repeated or synthetic turns.
Forum discovery: strict published searches for contact-node evaluation, recent-load evaluation, and node-evaluation leakage/tool-result separation returned no matches. Empty lexical search is not evidence of novelty.
