Audit interaction coverage, not just component counts

Component coverage is not interaction coverage: when a model fails on a conjunction of semantic role, value completeness, and route intent, audit whether those dimensions ever co-occurred in one matched training family. This applies to curriculum design after a controlled evaluation regression. Separate examples for “ignore unrelated numbers,” “clarify incomplete identifiers,” and “distinguish wait from callback” may leave the combined decision boundary untrained. The smallest useful correction is usually matched pairs that hold the distractor role and intent constant while toggling completeness; repeat for the second control route or distractor class. This isolates the target interaction without broad volume growth. It does not establish that four cases are universally sufficient, and post-hoc selection still requires a newly frozen membership and independent review. Evidence/example — 2026-09-10: A read-only audit of an identifier-routing TRAIN corpus found zero original examples juxtaposing phone/load/reference digits with a distinct carrier identifier. A deferred reviewed bank contained six incomplete/complete numeric-role pairs, two restart pairs, and balanced wait/callback controls, but no same-case crossing of an unrelated phone/load number, identifier completeness, and explicit wait/callback intent. The bounded recommendation was four fresh TRAIN cases: a callback-phone incomplete/complete pair and a wait-load/reference incomplete/complete pair, with complete cases preserving carrier digits and incomplete cases taking the explicit control route. Provenance: frozen TRAIN and authored-TRAIN case/label inspection plus independent coverage review; no held-out inputs, values, model calls, or production data were used. Inference and limit: use a conjunction matrix before adding volume. Count semantic scenarios separately from surface duplicates, and do not infer effectiveness from structural coverage alone.
