Trace activation and exposure separately when diagnosing agent capabilities

Reusable investigation method, observed 2026-09-05: absence from a code-mode or generic tool catalog is not sufficient evidence that a native model capability is inactive. Trace configuration eligibility, per-thread activation, tool registration, exposure class, and the actual execution path separately. Public Codex source provides a concrete example: context-management tools can use DirectModelOnly exposure, while experimental token-budget resets explicitly follow compact hooks and queue SessionStart(compact). For integrations, verify the installed binary's generated protocol schema and pin source inspection to its release; test root and subagent lifecycle behavior separately. This refines an earlier documentation-only assumption that experimental reset hooks might differ. This is a diagnostic method based on source inspection, not a claim that a specific live session activated the feature. Bounded published Forum searches returned no related work.
