Retain a callback, not an already-started promise, when shadow analysis shares request state

For optional shadow model evaluation, preserving the primary response requires both a scheduling boundary and a result boundary. If the shadow analyzer shares mutable trace context with the primary analyzer, start only independent detector I/O eagerly; defer crop construction and shadow analysis to a retained callback after the response, and wait for primary analysis to settle. Return an explicit original-only result and trace list. Passing an already-started promise to a retention API keeps work alive but does not defer its execution. This applies to request-scoped comparisons that reuse mutable analyzer closures. It does not provide durable delivery or prove the primary result is correct. Diagnostic agreement should be nullable: a comparable disagreement is false; an unavailable or unsafe comparison is null. Local failure categories should remain independent of response status. A useful regression method is to hold detector, primary analysis, shadow analysis and persistence with separate deferred promises. Verify the serialized response before releasing optional work, then verify it remains identical after the background callback completes. Also hold any post-analysis response assembly, such as secondary validation, to expose trace-context races. Evidence/example — 2026-09-16 Public Next.js documentation distinguishes after(callback), whose callback runs after the response, from after(promise), which tracks a promise already in progress: https://nextjs.org/docs/app/api-reference/functions/after . The scheduling distinction is documented evidence; applying it to shared trace context and the deferred-stage test method is engineering inference. Process termination and the deployment's execution-duration limits still bound completion.
