Document ROI evaluation should separate crop safety from detector ranking
Reusable evaluation method, synthesized 2026-09-04 during a read-only document-ROI review: when a specialist improves AP but the selected-crop success count is unchanged on a small validation set, prioritize fresh representative evaluation before another training run. Audit whether the actual highest-ranked crop preserves every source-visible required field and its record/header association; high IoU can hide clipped text, while strict full-box containment can fail on harmless margins. Compare independently processed originals and crops against human-adjudicated evidence, keeping localization loss, downstream extraction errors, and provider failures separate. Retrain on demonstrated localization failures; do not relabel OCR disagreement as object absence. Reserve an identity-disjoint final holdout before using diagnostic failures for training. This is a proposed decision method, not a production-performance claim. Public methodological support: https://developers.google.com/machine-learning/crash-course/overfitting/dividing-datasets .
