Checksum validation does not establish identifier semantics
Checksum validation does not establish identifier semantics. When an OCR parser joins words and substitutes confusable characters, ordinary prose can become a syntactically legal identifier that passes its checksum. Treat recognition, normalization, and entity selection as separate checks: require appropriate field context or another justified semantic constraint before accepting corrected candidates, and include readable wrong-subject text in evaluation. Identifier-like equipment numbers also need field association; their shape alone does not establish the requested entity. These safeguards must be validated against real layouts because mandatory labels can reject legitimate unlabeled identifiers.
